Running Google Ads for online sales is different from running ads for leads. Every click should be measured against the revenue it brings back, and the campaign types, feeds and tracking you choose decide whether you grow profitably or just burn budget.
The Campaign Types That Drive Orders
For online sales, three campaign types do most of the work:
- Shopping and Performance Max: show your products with photo, price and store name directly in search results. These need a product feed from Google Merchant Center.
- Search campaigns: text ads on buying-intent keywords like product names, categories and "buy" searches.
- Remarketing and Demand Gen: bring back visitors who browsed but did not buy, across YouTube, Gmail and Discover.
Most stores do best with Shopping or Performance Max as the engine and Search covering brand and high-intent terms.
Track Revenue, Not Just Orders
A sales campaign is only as good as its tracking. Pass the actual order value with every purchase conversion, so Google can optimise for revenue, not just transaction count. Without values, the system treats a small order the same as a large one. Also separate new-customer revenue from returning-customer revenue where you can — acquiring a new customer is usually worth more.
Your Product Feed Is Your Ad
In Shopping and Performance Max, your product feed decides when you appear. Titles should include brand, product type, size, colour and other attributes people search for. Images should be clean and on a plain background. Prices and availability must match your website exactly, or products get disapproved. Our Shopping feed optimisation guide goes deeper.
Profitability: ROAS Is Not the Whole Story
Return on ad spend (ROAS) tells you revenue per rupee of ad spend, but profit depends on your margins, shipping and returns. Work out your break-even ROAS from your contribution margin before setting targets. A campaign at a lower ROAS can still be profitable if margins are healthy — and a high-ROAS campaign can lose money if it mostly sells discounted, low-margin items.
Scaling What Works
Once tracking is clean and a campaign is profitable, scale gradually: raise budgets in steps, expand the feed, and add Search coverage for winning products. Avoid big overnight budget jumps, which reset the learning phase. If you are launching a new store, we can launch your ecommerce store in 15 days and set up sales campaigns from day one — see our Google Ads services or read the costs FAQ.
FAQs: Google ads for online sales
Which Google Ads campaign is best for online sales?
For most ecommerce stores, Shopping or Performance Max campaigns driven by a clean product feed bring the most orders. Search campaigns add coverage for brand and high-intent keywords.
What is a good ROAS for Google Ads?
There is no universal good number — it depends on your margins. Calculate your break-even ROAS from your contribution margin first, then set a target above it.
Why are my Shopping ads not showing?
Common causes are feed disapprovals, price or availability mismatches with your website, missing product identifiers, or bids too low for the auction. Check Merchant Center diagnostics first.
